After a year defined by rehab, patience, and grit, Abington High School junior Ray Rice is back on the basketball court, writes Tom Moore for The Bucks County Courier Times.
The 6-foot-3 forward missed the entire 2024–25 campaign after suffering a torn ACL, torn meniscus and bone bruise during a fall tournament game. The injury came just as he was competing for a starting role.
He underwent surgery with Rothman Orthopaedic Institute’s Dr. Robert Frederick. Afterward, he spent months rehabbing at Montgomery County Rehabilitation and Sports Therapy in Willow Grove. Along the way, he worked closely with Abington athletic trainer Bill Schmidt.
That work paid off when Rice suited up for Abington’s season opener in December. Though still wearing a protective brace and easing back into full minutes, he has made an immediate impact. Known for defense and physical play, Rice brings toughness and energy off the bench for an Abington team that climbed to the top of the District One Class 6A rankings.
Rice admits the mental hurdles were harder than the physical recovery. But steady support and self-belief carried him through.
This season holds extra meaning for Rice, who has been accepted to Drexel University to study audio engineering and may not play college basketball.
