The once annual, COVID-waylaid Abington Relay returns to Abington Senior High School, 900 Highland Ave., for the first time since 2019 with a 12-hour event on May 20, 2023.

“This is a true Abington tradition that brings together people of all ages and abilities to participate in a unique, memorable, and worthwhile experience,” said Kaitlyn Metzinger from Abington’s Citizens and Police Together (CAPT).

The relay is not only a connective opportunity in Montgomery County, it’s also also a CAPT fundraising project.

CAPT is a local, nonprofit organization that serves as supporter and fundraiser for Abington Township Police community projects.

Proceeds from the 2023 relay benefit drug and alcohol prevention programs and community activities in Abington and Rockledge.

The Challenge

The relay was once a 24-hour trek for teams to circle the track at Abington Senior High School. The 10-member squads of 60 teams sent one participant out at a time, walking, running, or even just trotting around the loop four times, then rotating athletes through the roster.

This year, the distance has been halved — it’s only a 12-hour challenge — but the fun and community spirit are just as plentiful.

Getting Involved

“It has been four years since we held the relay and we are hoping that enough families, businesses, schools, and students will help us reignite this tradition,” Metzinger said. “In the end, meeting this challenge brings the runners and teams together as a community.”

Registrations are being taken at Eventbrite. Sponsor and volunteer inquiries are being handled by email.
