From Local Courts to Hawk Hill: The Trust Powering St. Joe’s Womens Basketball

Local standouts Gabby Casey and Aleah Snead are leading St. Joe’s women’s basketball with trust, grit and Philly toughness.

Years of experience and chemistry are fueling the leadership under juniors Gabby Casey and Aleah Snead for St. Joe’s women’s basketball, writes Mia Messina for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Their connection goes back well before college. Casey and Snead played AAU ball together with the Philadelphia Belles, faced each other in high school, then arrived at St. Joe’s together in 2023. Now, they’re the backbone of a Hawks squad leaning on trust, toughness and familiarity to navigate a competitive Atlantic 10 schedule.

Casey leads the team in scoring, rebounding and steals, while Snead is close behind in each category and tops the roster in minutes played. Head coach Cindy Griffin says both have taken on expanded responsibility after key departures, setting the tone offensively, defensively and in the locker room.

That leadership is rooted in strong local pedigrees. Casey starred at Lansdale Catholic, setting program records, while Snead emerged from Penn Charter with a reputation for composure and grit. Those traits have translated seamlessly to the college game, helping St. Joe’s push past preseason expectations.

At its core, the Hawks’ success keeps coming back to trust, built over years of shared courts, sharpened by competition, and now fueling St. Joe’s push through the heart of the season.
