New toll rates took effect last weekend, bringing a 4% increase, which is the lowest annual hike since 2014.
For Montgomery County drivers, especially those regularly using the Fort Washington exit or the Northeast Extension, the change will be modest but noticeable.
On Turnpike segments where tolls are calculated by distance, the per-mile rate increases from 7 cents to 7.3 cents, while the segment fee rises from $1.09 to $1.13. On other extensions, tolls increase by a straight 4%.
In practical terms, the most common passenger-vehicle toll will rise from $1.86 to $1.94 for E-ZPass users and from $3.72 to $3.88 for Toll By Plate customers. Commercial drivers will see similar incremental increases.
Turnpike officials say the added revenue continues to be used entirely to pay down Act 44 transportation debt, which has funded statewide road and transit projects without raising taxes.
Since 2008, the Turnpike has contributed more than $8 billion to Pennsylvania’s transportation system.
Looking ahead, toll increases are scheduled to ease to 3.5% in 2027 and 3% in 2028. E-ZPass remains the most cost-effective option, offering roughly 50% savings compared to Toll By Plate.
