A major expansion for Norristown’s Elmwood Park Zoo is officially moving forward, writes Rachel Ravnia for The Times Herald.
County officials have approved a long-term lease allowing the zoo to expand onto adjacent land within Norristown Farm Park.
The agreement grants the zoo use of the historic Castner House, a structure dating back to 1802, under a 35-year lease administered in partnership with the state. Zoo leadership says the building will remain largely intact while being used for education, conservation programming, and community engagement, with the county committing at least $100,000 toward capital improvements in the park.
The expansion is part of the zoo’s broader $150 million master plan, which includes new animal habitats, infrastructure upgrades, and public amenities. Plans call for a greenhouse conservatory, event space, and enhanced connections between the zoo and Farm Park.
Zoo officials say the growth reflects a dramatic turnaround over the past decade. Once struggling with attendance and revenue, the Norristown zoo now welcomes more than 800,000 visitors annually and expects to reach the one-million-visitor milestone soon.
Future plans also emphasize public access, including free nature play areas, walk-through exhibits, and discounted admission for visitors who arrive on foot or by bike through the park and trail network.
