State and county officials who were on hand for the ribbon-cutting ceremony on Tuesday said the new bridge will play a significant role in Norristown’s economic growth and redevelopment.

The reconstructed bridge that now includes “two lanes of traffic and sidewalks on both sides” was completed two months earlier than expected and under budget, according to Montgomery County Roads and Bridges Administrator Thomas O’Brien.

Since the March closing, an estimated 18,000 daily vehicles had to be detoured backing up West Main Street.

“It’s an important thoroughfare here in Norristown. As I’ve said since I’ve been a commissioner, nobody knows who owns a bridge until it’s closed. So I’m glad we could get this open for the community in time for the holiday season,” said Montgomery County Commissioners’ Chairman Ken Lawrence Jr.

State Representative Greg Scott, D-54th District emphasized the addition of the sidewalks which will increase safety and accessibility for pedestrians.

Lawrence added that with the Elmwood Park Zoo, all the local businesses, and the proposed development of the Norristown State Hospital land, the bridge will be a “great connector”.
