Wissahickon High School’s Interact Club is hosting its second annual food drive with the goal of providing Thanksgiving meals for 200 families, reports Emily Rose Grassi and Deanna Durante for NBC10 Philadelphia.
“Not everybody is as privileged as maybe we are to have dinner every day,” said junior Sanjona Tunious. “This whole thing is what we’re doing for them, so they can eat and they can have a good Thanksgiving dinner.”
To help, students and staff at Wissahickon High School organize food donations year-round.
“This summer, we delivered 1,100 lunches in just six weeks,” said Derrick Bean, a member of Wissahickon support staff.
This year is particularly critical, as SNAP benefits are suspended during the government shutdown.
The students are hoping to collect 800 boxes of stuffing, 400 boxes of mashed potatoes, 800 cans of corn, 800 cans of green beans, 200 cans of cranberry sauce, 400 boxes of macaroni and cheese, as well as coupons for a free turkey from local grocery stores or grocery store gift cards.
Donations can be dropped off by Nov. 14 at the main office of any school within the Wissahickon School District.
