Taxpayers are funding about $1 million in security upgrades at Governor Josh Shapiro’s private Montco home, writes Angela Couloumbis for Spotlight PA.
This follows the April arson attack that endangered the Abington native and his family at the governor’s official residence in Harrisburg.
In a letter to state lawmakers, Pennsylvania State Police Commissioner Christopher Paris and Department of General Services Secretary Reggie McNeill confirmed the improvements.
These include new physical and visual barriers, advanced security technology, and other undisclosed measures. The officials emphasized that such upgrades are necessary amid rising political violence.
At the same time, the state has allocated $32.3 million in safety upgrades to the Governor’s Residence, including bulletproof windows, improved fencing, enhanced lighting, motion detection sensors, and a new fire suppression system. The fire, set by a Harrisburg man, caused extensive damage while the Shapiro family slept upstairs.
Shapiro’s spokesperson said the administration sought guidance from the State Ethics Commission before proceeding, ensuring there was “no improper private gain” from the taxpayer-funded improvements.
While the attack left the family shaken, Shapiro said it strengthened his resolve to continue serving Pennsylvanians.
