A lot of small businesses in the Philadelphia region are currently struggling due to President Donald Trump’s tariffs, but the family-run Trappe Tavern in Trappe is not one of them, writes Gene Marks for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
On April 2, Trump declared an “Independence Day,” which brought in a minimum ten percent tariff on countries selling products into the United States, including India and China. Since then, he has implemented additional tariffs and threatened many more.
But despite the added challenges that the tariffs have been creating for many businesses, Trappe Tavern is holding steady for the time being.
“We’ve had some prices creep up,” said David Duryea, the restaurant’s owner. “In general, it hasn’t really had much of an effect at all.”
However, if these conditions remain unchanged or worsen in the future, Duryea may need to make some adjustments, especially if the costs of the food and supplies he orders continue to rise. On top of that, if customers start to reduce their spending, it could have a noticeable impact on his business.
“If that happens, we’re going to have to raise prices like everyone else,” he said.
