Lower Merion Township could soon be inviting developer proposals for a 500-space parking garage that would be adjacent to Ardmore train station, with additional commercial uses allowed, writes Paul Schwedelson for the Philadelphia Business Journal.
In partnership with Amtrak, the township has been considering plans to build a parking garage on the one-acre site for several years, but never had the necessary funding. The township is now considering a deal that could bring in a developer to construct the garage.
The site, just off Lancaster Avenue and next to Suburban Square, currently serves as a surface parking lot for riders that use Amtrak and SEPTA’s regional rail.
According to township documents, the new 500-space parking garage, expected to be completed by 2030, would be “central to the project,” which could also include a variety of other commercial uses.
“The development is expected to support the Ardmore community, expand the township’s tax base and increase rail and transit ridership,” state the documents.
To move forward, Lower Merion Township’s Board of Commissioners must approve marketing the site for redevelopment. Last week, the township’s Economic Development Committee unanimously voted to recommend the marketing plan.
