Fig Fanatics Flock to Pottstown for 2nd Annual Pennsylvania Fig Festival

Fig fanatics from across the state flocked to Pottstown last Saturday for the 2nd annual Pennsylvania Fig Festival, celebrating the fruit.

Fig fanatics from across the state and beyond flocked to Pottstown on Saturday for the 2nd annual Pennsylvania Fig Festival, that celebrates the famous fruit, reports Matteo Iadonisi for 6abc.

Visitors were welcomed by growers of fig trees who were happy to share their wares and teach useful techniques during workshops.

The event was held at the Althouse Arboretum, which is overseen by the Green Allies nonprofit.

Through the organization, students in the Upper Pottsgrove Township area are provided with opportunities to learn leadership skills in environmental sustainability. The students are in charge of creating various programs at the Arboretum, including the haunted woods experience and other events.

The Fig Festival helps bring awareness to the Green Allies programs.

“I started growing figs a couple of years ago,” said Donna Howard Wethey, Development Coordinator at Green Allies. “I saw there was a huge community online, on Facebook, and whatnot. I reached out to a fellow that I didn’t know and I said, ‘Hey, would you like to co-host a fig festival?’ And this is what we have here.”

The festival was a one-day-only event that will return around the same time next year.
