GSK Picks Upper Merion for an AI-Powered Biologics Hub

GSK will build an AI-enabled biologics factory in Upper Merion as part of a $1.2B U.S. investment, reinforcing Montco's life-sciences base.

GSK is turning to Upper Merion for its next-gen biologics “flex” factory, writes Harold Brubaker for the Philadelphia Inquirer.

The British pharma giant will add a flexible biologics factory at its Upper Merion campus. This is part of a $1.2 billion U.S. investment unveiled during President Donald Trump’s visit to the United Kingdom

The project positions Upper Merion for new high-skilled manufacturing tied to therapies for respiratory disease and cancer, with construction slated to begin next year.

CEO Emma Walmsley calls the Montco build a “next-gen biologics ‘flex’ factory powered by AI, advanced technologies and expert talent.” This underscores how GSK plans to speed development and scale production on the same footprint. The $1.2 billion package also funds new AI and advanced digital capabilities across five U.S. manufacturing sites in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Maryland, and Montana.

The expansion follows last year’s $800 million commitment to enlarge GSK’s Marietta, Pa., plant—then the company’s largest U.S. manufacturing investment—doubling that facility’s size.

With overseas drugmakers such as AstraZeneca, Novartis, Roche, and Sanofi likewise boosting U.S. operations, GSK’s latest move signals continued confidence in Montgomery County as a hub for next-gen biomanufacturing.
