After a nearly four-decade career as a guidance counselor, Linda Dubin Garfield of Bala Cynwyd retired to pursue her lifelong dream of becoming an artist, reports Matteo Iadonisi for 6abc.
Dubin Garfield had always loved art since childhood, but her parents had other plans for her future.
“When I was eight years old, I knew I wanted to be an artist,” she said. “In the early sixties, I said, ‘Mom, Dad, I want to go to art school,’ and they said, ‘No, you’re not going to art school.’”
Instead, she studied at Temple and became an English teacher for five years, followed by 38 years as a guidance counselor before she finally retired 20 years ago.
She then immediately went back to her first love, art and began creating colorful prints and other mixed media pieces.
Seeking to give her art greater purpose, she founded Art Sisters, an organization that collects women’s artwork for fundraising events that benefit charitable causes. Each year on her birthday, the 82-year-old raises money for various charities, most recently collecting $2,000 for the Old City Jewish Art Center.
