At Jefferson Abington Hospital, mentorship is a mission and tradition, reports Nick Iadonisi for 6abc Action News.
For more than six decades, the Montco medical center has hosted a unique Pre-Med Program that invites college students to explore the many paths a career in medicine can take.
The program, led by Director of Medical Education Dr. John Russell, offers undergraduates a chance to shadow professionals. Students are offered a range of specialties, from OB/GYN and oncology to emergency medicine and primary care.
“It’s been an opportunity for undergraduates to come to the hospital and really experience firsthand what people are doing in lots of different specialties in medicine,” said Russell.
Each fall, the Abington hospital selects a group of 24 participants for the following summer. It’s a competitive, volunteer-based program that draws students to the clinical environment. As they follow doctors through real patient care scenarios, many hone in on their passion and get a clearer vision of the future.
