Audubon Water Company had been struggling for the past two years to fix leaks on its water main, losing around 50,000 gallons of water per day and asking Lower Providence Township residents to conserve water as a result, writes Zoë Read for WHYY.
In addition to critically low water levels at its drinking water wells, the company faced further troubles last year when toxic PFAS chemicals were detected in its water. These chemicals can persist in the environment for decades and are linked to several serious health problems. As of this year, Audubon Water was no longer in compliance with state PFAS regulations.
Pennsylvania American Water acquired the Montgomery County company in May and has since managed to both fix the leaks and ensure that customers are now receiving clean water.
“Since Pennsylvania American Water took ownership of the Audubon system, we’ve seen a level of responsiveness and expertise that’s made a real difference for our community,” said E.J. Mentry, Lower Providence Township Manager. “They are moving quickly to improve the system and provide access to safe, reliable water for residents.”
