During a recent appearance on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” Governor Josh Shapiro opened up about faith, resilience and the only election he’s ever lost, writes Aliya Schneider for the Philadelphia Inquirer.
The Abington native opened up to Colbert about his path to public service and how a teenage attempt to impress a girl didn’t go as planned.
“I got whooped,” Shapiro said about his run for student council in 11th grade. “There were three candidates, I finished dead last … did not impress the girl with that.”
The girl was his now wife, Lori. Colbert quipped that Lori must have been swayed by Shapiro’s resilience.
Shapiro admitted the early loss actually turned him off politics for a while. He originally aspired to follow in his father’s footsteps as a physician or play in the NBA. “I thought I could do both,” he joked.
Everything changed in college. Shapiro ran again for student government. This time he was successful. The experience reignited his passion for public service and the rest is history.
Shapiro has come a long way since his humble loss in high school. With a national spotlight upon him, he says that his focus on making people’s lives better.
