Norristown’s Clean and Safe Team Aims to Refresh the County Seat

A $400K Clean and Safe Program is transforming Norristown’s downtown with ambassadors tackling trash, graffiti, and perception.

A team of highly visible “Norristown Ambassadors” is working daily to freshen up the streets thanks to a new $400,000 initiative dubbed the Clean and Safe Program, writes Rachel Ravina for The Reporter.

Funded through a two-year pilot backed by American Rescue Plan dollars and local support, the program is a partnership between Montco and the Norristown Chamber of Commerce, in collaboration with the firm, Block by Block.

The three-person crew has been busy removing graffiti, pulling weeds, clearing litter, pressure-washing sidewalks, and even offering a helping hand to residents. Focus areas include Maine, Swede, Airy, Dekalb, and Marshall Streets. Also included are key sites like the courthouse and Norristown Transportation Center.

“It’s making an effort already in the perception of Norristown being clean and also being friendly,” said Chamber President Kym Ramsey. “It’s been life-changing, really.”

Beyond beautification, the program includes a safety component with regular office patrols and aims to draw more foot traffic downtown.
