Family-owned Mama’s Pizzeria in Bala Cynwyd has been serving some of the best hoagies in Pennsylvania and beyond since the 1970s, writes Claire Allard for the Family Destinations Guide.
The eatery offers Italian-American comfort food that tastes like it came from a beloved grandmother’s kitchen.
The establishment is so deeply loved by locals that it has become part of the community’s fabric, creating food-related memories for generations of the same families.
Inside, you will not find modern industrial decor. Instead, checkered blue tablecloths cover simple tables, walls which are adorned with classic Italian-American imagery along with a handwritten menu board displaying its sizable selection of sandwiches, hoagies, and pizza.
Despite having “Pizzeria” in its name, locals know that the real star here is the hoagie. This standout sandwich features tender, thinly sliced roast beef piled generously on a fresh Italian roll, topped with sharp provolone. You can add lettuce, tomato, and onion iyou wish. The crowning touch is a ladle of savory, aromatic jus that elevates the sandwich from superb to heavenly.
However, while the hoagie may steal the spotlight, Mama’s Pizzeria also offers delicious pizzas and cheesesteaks that should not be missed.
