Though the name may suggest otherwise, Bala Cynwyd’s Mama’s Pizzeria is known less for pizza and more for their delicious cheesesteaks, writes Tommy Rowan for the Philadelphia Inquirer.
Years ago, Mama’s made the transition to the Philadelphia specialty – and it’s become their specialty indeed.
Second-generation owner Paul Castellucci has been at the flattop for nearly 50 years, working his magic with a three-cheese blend and finely chopped sirloin. His son, Paulie, slices rolls, takes orders, and handles the books — and the duo are now a two-man show.
Paulie, 25, is finishing his degree at St. Joe’s and plans to become a CPA. Once he passes the exam, he’s out. And Paul Sr., now 64, says he’ll retire too.
After nearly 70 years, rising costs and fewer customers mean Mama’s time is running out. But for now, the steaks are still incredible — gooey, rich, and tucked into a warm, spongy roll from Del Buono’s.
The shop was started in 1958 by Paul Sr.’s parents, and it’s always been a family affair. “You didn’t have a choice,” Paul Jr. jokes. “Once you’re old enough to walk, you could wash dishes.”
Soon, the grill will cool for good. But while it lasts, Mama’s is still serving up one of the best steaks around — the kind you don’t forget.
