Abington native Governor Josh Shapiro is safe following an arson attack at the Governor’s Residence in Harrisburg early Sunday morning, according to The Keystone.
Shapiro, his wife Lori, their four children, and guests were celebrating Passover when a fire broke out around 2 a.m. Thanks to swift action by state troopers and first responders, everyone was evacuated safely and no injuries were reported.
Authorities say the suspect, Cody Balmer of Dauphin County, broke into the residence and ignited multiple fires using Molotov cocktails. He has been charged with attempted murder, terrorism, and related offenses. Officials believe the act was premeditated, though the motive remains unclear.
At a press conference, an emotional Shapiro expressed gratitude for his family’s safety and reaffirmed his commitment to serving Pennsylvania. “I refuse to be trapped by the bondage that someone attempts to put on me by attacking us as they did here last night,” he said. “I refuse to let anyone who had evil intentions like that stop me from doing the work that I love.”
Leaders from both political parties swiftly condemned the attack. Republican lawmakers, including Sen. Dave McCormick and Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick, called the act “despicable.”
