Bryn Mawr resident John Middleton is known as the Phillies owner with World Series-sized ambitions, but he and his wife have another passion, writes Peter Dobrin for the Philadelphia Inquirer.
The Middletons have quietly spent decades assembling one of the finest private collections of American art in existence. The long-guarded trove is finally stepping into the spotlight.
In 2026, Leigh and John Middleton will debut approximately 120 pieces from their personal collection across two major Philadelphia institutions: The Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.
The debut be a part of ‘A Nation of Artists’, a blockbuster Semiquincentennial exhibition, billed as the most ambitious display of American art ever staged in the city.
The collection includes masterworks by Edward Hopper, Childe Hassam, Albert Bierstadt, and Jasper Johns, as well as rare Revolutionary-era furniture and flags. Until now, these treasures have only been seen via quiet museum loans or within the family’s Bryn Mawr home.
The Middletons are also underwriting the exhibition with multimillion-dollar gifts to both institutions.
Beyond the galleries, the Middletons’ legacy will continue through their children, who already have stewardship of the family’s archive.
