Izzy’s in Ardmore is the Cozy Hidden Gem Worth the Wait in Line

You might have to wait in line at Izzy’s in Ardmore during peak hours as the izakaya does not have reservations, but the food is worth it.

Izzy’s in Ardmore is a tiny izakaya that draws a big crowd, and while you might have to wait due to the lack of reservations, the food and craft cocktails are well worth it, writes Jason Sheehan for the Philadelphia Magazine.

The eatery is operated by Peter Martin, who also runs Ardmore Music Hall and Ripplewood next door, a gastropub which shares its kitchen with Izzy’s.

Despite having no website – just an Instagram page – Izzy’s has quickly been discovered by locals who continue to pack the cozy, 20-seat izakaya. The interior is understated, with a few chairs at the window counter, several small high-tops, and a bar, all framed by pale wood and softly glowing hanging lamps. A steady stream of 1980s New Wave music gives a warm sense of nostalgia.

The tight menu offers intriguing diversions, from hand rolls to shredded brisket birria tucked into bao buns with Oaxaca cheese and served with guajillo broth for dipping, to warm miso soup clouded with silky tofu. Another local favorite is the whole soft-shell shrimp, fried and wrapped in soy paper.
