Members of Horsham VFW Post 9788 headed out into nature over the weekend to teach local kids one of their shared favorite hobbies – fishing, reports Nick Iadonisi for 6abc.

“The VFW is part of the community, and the community supports the VFW,” said Vince Laurich, a member of Horsham VFW Post 9788. “It’s an opportunity for us to give back. Any time veterans are interacting with other people and getting a positive response is a good thing.”

Sunday was a Day of Service for the VFW, and its members came up with the idea of giving fishing rods to local kids. Much of the equipment was donated, so each child could go home with their own rod along with some special new memories.

“We did it last year, we gave away 80,” said Laurich. “And it was nothing but smiles. The people that helped me, they had more fun than the kids. And eight kids caught the first fish they ever caught in their lives. So we’re making memories in the communities. It’s pretty terrific.”
