Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin Steele presented the Civilian Commendation for Exceptional Service this week to two selfless men, writes Vinny Vella for the Philadelphia Inquirer.
Their actions during a tragic crash in Whitemarsh Township helped give a mother and her unborn child a fighting chance.
Guerin Jones, a neonatal physician assistant at CHOP, and Brent Fryling, a visiting doctor from Massachusetts, had never met until May 4, 2024. That night, they found themselves at the scene of a horrific crash on Skippack Pike, where 24-year-old Nya Stokes, eight months pregnant, lay critically injured after her partner, under the influence of multiple drugs, veered off the road.
Without hesitation, Jones and Fryling rushed to her side, taking turns performing CPR and assisting medics. Jones even accompanied Stokes in the ambulance and was present during an emergency C-section that delivered her son, Saleh, who lived five days in critical care.
“Civilians like you who rush in to help during an emergency are heroes,” Steele told them.
The two remained involved after the tragedy, supporting the family and prosecutors.
