Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin Steele — accompanied by D.A.s from the other collar counties — announced the deployment of a new crime-fighting tool, NIBLIN. Jeff Cole reported it for FOX29 Philadelphia.

The National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBLIN) is a database-driven technology that analyzes the unique grooves and patterns formed on the spent bullet shells. The markings are intended to ease the search for anyone perpetrating a crime in which a firearm was used.

D.A. Steele said the system “enables us to interrupt the shooting cycle, stopping a shooter from doing it again, and therefore reducing overall gun violence.”

Federal dollars are funding the local NIBLIN access. Representatives from local criminal justice organizations declined to tally the exact price tag; however, data from other law enforcement agencies using it cite outlays of $200,000, plus training costs.

Camden County has already incorporated the database into its crime-investigation procedures, and its law-enforcement representatives state that it has already provided valuable leads.

More on NIBLIN and its local use is at FOX29 Philadelphia.
