Wynnewood’s Sunrise Day Camp Gives Kids with Cancer a Chance to Enjoy Typical Camp Activities

Sunrise Day Camp at the Kaiserman JCC in Wynnewood is a true ray of light for children battling cancer and their families.

Sunrise Day Camp at the Kaiserman JCC in Wynnewood, over seven weeks each summer, is a true ray of light for children battling cancer and their families, writes Nydia Han for 6abc.

The free summer camp provides kids living with the often deadly disease with the opportunity to do typical camp stuff, including swimming and crafting.

A year ago, Elliette Long was diagnosed with B lymphoblastic leukemia.

“I got really, really, really scared I honestly thought I was going to die for a second,” said the ten-year-old.

She had to miss school and doing dance to attend doctor’s appointments and treatment.

“Now also she wouldn’t be able to get to camp and so this kid who’s lost so much, she’s losing more,” said her mother, Lacey.

Then, the family learned about the Greater Philadelphia chapter of Sunrise Association Day Camp.

“Everybody is welcome there,” said Elliette. “If you’re sick, everybody’s welcome and it’s safe for you. It’s just a safe place to be.”

The camp has two nurses always on-site and offers modified versions of various games, including basketball using a softer ball.
