Giant Foods Claims Top Spot as Grocery Chains Consolidate in Montgomery County

Out of roughly 120 grocery stores in Montgomery County, 17 percent are Giant Food locations, followed by Aldi at nine percent.

Grocery chains like Giant Foods have become bigger than ever by acquiring their smaller local and regional competitors, with Walmart, Kroger, Aldi (Süd), and Albertsons now owning a third of all the grocery store locations in the country, write Kevin Schaul and Jaclyn Peiser for The Washington Post.

While three of the four grocery giants are present in Montgomery County, the top spot for the highest share of stores goes to Giant Food, owned by Ahold Delhaize, at 17 percent.

Aldi (Süd) is next, with nine percent of the grocery market belonging to Aldi stores. Target comes in next with its eight percent share of stores, followed by Walmart and Sam’s Club, both owned by Walmart, which also have eight percent.

Acme stores owned by Albertsons now has seven percent of the local share of stores, while Amazon’s Whole Foods Market and Weis each have four percent of the grocery market.

Finally, Redner’s rounds out the list with its share of stores that currently sits at three percent.

Wegman’s did not make the list.
