Germantown Academy’s Jianna Kim Carries Family Legacy as Special Olympics Volunteer

Germantown Academy senior Jianna Kim continues the family legacy through her volunteer work with Special Olympics Pennsylvania.

Germantown Academy senior Jianna Kim is continuing a family legacy through her volunteer work with Special Olympics Pennsylvania, according to a staff report from 6abc.

Kim’s grandfather brought the program to South Korea, inspiring in his granddaughter a passion for helping individuals with special needs discover the joy of sports.

She began working directly with the Montgomery County track and field team in sixth grade. Today, she is a certified coach for long-distance walkers.

Kim likes to help in other ways as well, including through her nonprofit, GIVE-Youth, which introduces young people to opportunities to volunteer. As part of this, she has linked Germantown Academy with Special Olympics, a partnership which is a perfect fit for the service-oriented school.

“Last year, I was able to provide opportunities for students at my school to volunteer at the local track meet,” said Kim.

This year, the high school earned recognition as a “Cool School” for its advocacy and fundraising efforts in support of Special Olympics. Kim has also engaged her entire community in Worcester Township in greater involvement with the organization.

“There’s just more people actively looking to serve Special Olympics in my community, which I just find really exciting,” she said.
