Girls Wrestling in Upper Perkiomen School District Finding Its Footing with Help from Local Family

A family of wrestlers, including two alumni and their daughters, help girls wrestling find its footing in the Upper Perkiomen School District.

A family of wrestlers are helping girls wrestling find its footing in the Upper Perkiomen School District, reports Matteo Iadonisi for 6abc.

“Wrestling is a really fun sport,” said Kyla Garner, a member of the Upper Perk Girls Wrestling team. “And I feel that if you do it, you’d like it a lot.”

Kyla loved watching her father coach wrestling and hoped he would one day coach her as well.

“Our family comes from a long line of wrestlers within this community,” said Ryan Garner, assistant coach for the Upper Perk Girls Wrestling program. “Several generations of wrestling within our blood.”

Garner was happy when his daughter stepped up to carry on the family tradition.

The girls wrestling program at Upper Perk did not exist before last year. Garner and his cousin, head coach Mark Smith, saw this as a family affair, especially with their daughters getting excited about the idea of joining the team.

“We put our best foot forward to try to get this pushed through,” said Garner.

Today, more than 20 girls participate in the program both in middle school and high school.
