History was made Saturday afternoon as the North Penn ice hockey team captured its first-ever Pennsylvania State High School Hockey championship, writes Mike Cabrey for The Reporter.
The Knights rallied from a goal down in the third period to defeat Cathedral Prep 4-1 in the Class AA title game at Robert Morris University’s Island Sports Center.
Down 1-0 heading into the final period, North Penn flipped the script in dramatic fashion. Sam Norton tied it up with a power-play goal, then James Boyle gave the Knights the lead with another man-advantage strike with just 3:36 left. Danial Cabrales kept the momentum rolling, scoring just 19 seconds later to make it 3-1. Nolan Shingle sealed the deal with an empty-netter in the final minute.
Freshman goalie Andy Norton was rock solid between the pipes, stopping 26 of 27 shots to help secure the win.
The Knights’ title run caps off a historic week, coming just days after claiming their first Flyers Cup with an 8-2 third-period explosion over Council Rock South. After two previous trips to the Flyers Cup finals in 2009 and 2015 ended in disappointment, North Penn finally broke through this year.
