The North Penn Post-12 program prepares students with disabilities for life beyond the classroom with practical skills and hands-on experience, writes Tyler Agriss for The Knight Crier.
Each student’s journey is guided by a personalized goal, created in collaboration with their families and school administrators. Goals range from independent living to competitive employment, volunteering, or other pursuits. The program ensures these aspirations are achievable through tailored teaching and real-world experiences.
In the classroom, students learn essential life skills, such as budgeting, banking, cooking, and navigating public transportation. They also practice apartment living in a simulated setting, mastering tasks like kitchen safety and making a bed.
A standout feature of the program is partnerships with local businesses. At Walgreens, students gain valuable job experience by stocking shelves, identifying expired items, and breaking down boxes. Initially provided with full support, students gradually gain independence.
“It’s really neat to see them thrive…,” said one of the Post-12 program teachers. “By the end of the year, they are doing it independently and are very proud of themselves.”
With dedicated staff and a nurturing community, Post-12 ensures its students are well-prepared to succeed in society.
