Montco Chef Zack Wannawong Rebuilds Life After Amputation, Eyes Culinary Comeback

Montco chef Zack Wannawong lost his leg to a rare infection—now he’s fighting for his comeback to an already storied career.

Few people wake up expecting their lives to change forever. But that’s exactly what happened to Zack Wannawong on April 8, 2024, write Kylee Steiglelman and Ben Silver for Main Line Today.

The chef, known for his work at Conshohocken’s Hotel West & Main, woke with unbearable pain in his right foot. Suspecting a blood clot, he rushed to the hospital—only to learn he had necrotizing fasciitis, a rare and aggressive infection. Doctors put him in a coma for three weeks, and when he woke up, his right leg had been amputated to the hip to save his life.

For a chef who had spent years honing his craft, the loss was devastating. But Wannawong is no stranger to adversity.

Originally from Thailand, he fell in love with cooking in his grandmother’s restaurant before moving to the U.S. at 16. He worked his way up from washing dishes in Florida to training under Japanese masters in D.C. before landing in the Main Line, and eventually Conshohocken.

Now, he’s determined to reclaim his place in the kitchen and inspire others. While navigating recovery, he’s launching a YouTube channel to share recipes and culinary insights.

“I still have a long career ahead of me,” he says. With his resilience, there’s no doubt he’ll make it happen.
