Buckets Tavern, a beloved Jenkintown dive bar, has officially gone smoke-free after 54 years, writes Jenn Ladd for the Philadelphia Inquirer.
The decision follows years of debate and shifting public preferences, with owner Joe Braman and managing partner Matthew Martin acknowledging that times have changed.
“There are more nonsmokers than smokers,” Braman said. “Kids today, they didn’t grow up with smoke. Their parents didn’t even smoke.”
Buckets closed briefly for renovations, reopening on March 1 with a fresh ceiling, new paint, and updated furniture. While the switch initially concerned some regulars, Martin said most understood the need for change and would simply step outside to smoke.
Known for its late hours and cash-only policy, Buckets has long been a haven for hospitality workers and loyal patrons. However, some former customers had stopped coming due to the lingering smoke. With this change, Martin hopes to draw a broader crowd while keeping the same neighborhood charm.
The tavern’s history runs deep. Originally the Yorkshire House, it became Buckets in 1971 and quickly gained a reputation for its draft beer and roast beef sandwiches. Over the years, it has adapted to shifting trends while maintaining its identity.
Now, with clear air and a fresh look, Buckets aims to welcome new faces while keeping its old-school appeal intact.
