For Skippack’s Steve Brady, being a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH) is about more than just celebrating St. Patrick’s Day—it’s about fellowship, service, and tradition. Since joining Division 6 in 2009, he has found a community of like-minded men who share his passion for Irish culture and giving back.
The AOH, a historic Irish Catholic organization, dates back to 17th-century Ireland and was formally established in the U.S. in the 1830s and 1840s. Originally formed to protect Catholic churches and support Irish immigrants, the AOH has evolved into a charitable and cultural organization that actively promotes Irish heritage while pushing back against anti-Irish stereotypes.
In Montgomery County, four AOH divisions—Bridgeport, Glenside, Hatfield, and western Montgomery County—carry on this legacy through community service and cultural events year-round. But March is a particularly special time.
St. Patrick’s Day, the global celebration of Irish culture, is the biggest day of the year for the AOH, and in Montgomery County, the highlight is the Conshohocken St. Patrick’s Day Parade. This Saturday will mark Brady’s 15th time marching, a tradition he looks forward to every year.
“The parade brings a smile to my face when we start down the hill on Fayette Street in Conshohocken, lined with families from babies to gray hairs celebrating,” Brady said. “The local pubs are full of people all smiling and wishing each other well as you observe grandpops trying to teach 5 year olds the words to Irish rebel songs.”
Men of Irish Catholic heritage interested in joining the Ancient Order of Hibernians can find more information at AOHPASTATE.org.
As Brady says, if you’re lucky enough to be Irish, you’re lucky enough!
