Amtrak’s bus service between Reading and Philadelphia, a crucial link for daily commuters, students, and travelers, will officially end March 18, writes José Martínez for WFMZ 69 News.
“I was looking forward to using this bus to go home this semester because my mom can’t bring me back and forth,” said Ashley, a Kutztown University student.
She is one of many riders frustrated over the line’s cancellation, which leaves them scrambling to figure out an alternative way to travel.
But while the bus service will shut down, Reading Mayor Eddie Moran said work on restoring passenger rail service continues to move forward, especially with the city recording significant growth in business and entertainment.
The Berks County Board of Commissioners recently extended the Schuylkill River Passenger Rail Authority’s charter for another 47 years, solidifying long-term efforts to bring passenger trains back to the city. Reading achieved another milestone by getting approved for the Federal Railroad Administration Corridor ID Program.
Officials are now finalizing negotiations with Amtrak and Norfolk Southern, while addressing budgetary constraints and infrastructure requirements.
“I believe that it will be here within the next five years or sooner,” said Moran.
