Released 40 years ago, Witness is a timeless Peter Weir thriller starring Harrison Ford as a Philadelphia detective unraveling a 30th Street Station murder mystery on a train trip that started at the Parkesburg train station, writes Peter Tonguette for The Wall Street Journal.
The film is set against the backdrop of Pennsylvania’s Amish country, and masterfully intertwines the investigation with an exploration of the cultural contrasts.
The story follows young Samuel, played by Lukas Haas, and his mother, Rachel, played by Kelly McGillis, as they journey from their peaceful Amish community to Philadelphia. The trip starts at the Parkesburg train station, where the boy and his mother Rachel board a train to Philadelphia’s 30th Street station, where the boy witnesses a brutal murder.
That event sets the plot in motion, drawing Detective John Book, played by Ford, into a dangerous conspiracy while also forcing the Amish mother and son to have to navigate a world far removed from their own.
The movie introduces Samuel to a world of violence, but it also introduces Book to a place of kindness and piety, changing both of them in the process.
Through its compelling storytelling and unforgettable scenes, Witness remains a timeless exploration of humanity, morality, and the clash of two worlds.
