The Brutalist, a story about a Holocaust survivor who builds a community center in Doylestown, was one of the biggest winners at this year’s Golden Globes, writes Rosa Cartagena for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
The movie won three awards: Best Motion Picture – Drama, Best Director – Motion Picture for Brady Corbet, and Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama for Adrien Brody.
During his speech, Brody choked up while talking about his parents. His mother, Sylvia Plachy, moved from Hungary to Queens, New York, much like the father of his character László Tóth, who immigrated from Hungary to Philadelphia.
“The character’s journey is very reminiscent of my mother’s and my ancestral journey of fleeing the horrors of war and coming to this great country, and I owe so much to my mother and my grandparents for their sacrifice,” said Brody.
The movie, filmed in Doylestown and various locations across Hungary, was nominated for a total of seven categories, including Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture for Guy Pearce.
The Brutalist will be released in theaters on January 10.
