A 1920s Bryn Mawr Home Gets Family-Friendly Renovation

A stately manor home surrounded by lush gardens takes up a large corner lot in Bryn Mawr, looking like something straight out of a picturesque fantasy. But the interior of this 1920s home wasn’t always as lovely as the surroundings that envelop it, writes Eileen Smith Dallabrida for Main Line Today.

Previously, the kitchen and the family room felt closed off.

This was a drawback for the home’s current owners, two attorneys with three young children and another on the way. So, they hired interior designer Glenna Stone to make their home suit their need for open space.

Clean, custom white cabinets that have plenty of storage with a milky quartzite countertop give the kitchen a bright, luxurious feeling while also being easy to clean. The large windows pull in natural light, while the nickel-and-glass hanging pendants provide task lighting when needed.

“Ultimately, it’s a kitchen that looks fabulous but is also incredibly functional and can take anything their busy lifestyle throws at it,” Stone said.

In this vintage home, a key part of the renovation was deciding which features should be preserved.

“In the family room, the built-ins and window seat were existing and truly so perfect against the backdrop of the gardens,” Stone said. “We just added window treatments and a new cushion there. Otherwise, they were a gem.”

To keep the open flow throughout the room, hardwood was laid throughout the space. The dining room walls were painted to echo the soft hues of the kitchen and breakfast room. When updating the fireplace, Stone surrounded the marble set in a herringbone pattern.

The family room is situated with a soft navy-blue sectional sofa, perfect for a growing family. The coffee table has rounded child-friendly edges. The renovated home is truly suited for every member of the family.

“The redesigned space is the center of all our daily activities. It’s where we prepare our meals, eat together, do homework, and spend time as a family reading books and watching movies,” the owner said. “The design is open, bright, and makes the entire home feel more connected. The transformation is really amazing.”
