Gov. Shapiro has wagered some local food favorites, including a standout from Montgomery County, as part of a lighthearted Super Bowl bet.

A friendly — but passionate — Super Bowl LVII bet had Gov. Josh Shapiro risking a Montgomery County delicacy. Pat Loeb and Jim Melwert of KYW Newsradio reported the local delights he’ll unfortunately now be paying up with.

These public-servant Super Bowl wagers are a long-standing tradition that generally involves a trademark dish.

But not always.

In the 2022 battle of the Los Angeles Rams v. the Cincinnati Bengals, the latter city’s mayor added sting to the rivalry. He required that — should the City of Angles lose — the metropolis would change its name to “Loss Angeles.”

Ouch.

Didn’t happen, though. Los Angeles won, and Cincinnati’s mayor attended a public event in a Rams jersey and donated funds to a Southern California children’s hospital.

This year, Shapiro risked some statewide culinary excellence: cheesesteaks, soft pretzels, and “donuts from … [one of our] finest small businesses.”

That would be Collegeville Italian Bakery, whose reputation surely revealed itself to Shapiro as County Commissioner.

“I will put those items up if the Chiefs win — something I’m confident won’t happen,” he said in a statement he’d probably like to walk back now.

Had the Eagles emerged victorious, Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly would have forked over steaks and chocolate-covered sunflower seeds.

Shapiro also made an Eagles–Chiefs side bet with Mike Parson, governor of adjacent Missouri. In the aftermath of the Feb. 12 game, he now must hang the a Kansas City team’s flag in his office for a week.

Full details on this political Super Bowl bet is at KYW Newsradio.
