Montco’s Owen Garwood Scores $10,000 Thanks to A-Rod’s Halftime Basket

Montgomery County's Owen Garwood wins $10,000 after Alex Rodriguez sinks half-court shot at Bucknell game.

Montgomery County native and Bucknell University sophomore Owen Garwood had an unforgettable night after former MLB star Alex Rodriguez secured him a $10,000 prize, writes Gabrielle Rockson for Yahoo! Sports.

During halftime of Bucknell’s men’s basketball game against Army, Rodriguez took part in a half-court shot contest. If he made the shot, a randomly selected student would win $10,000.

Garwood, a finance major, was the lucky student chosen. As the crowd watched, Rodriguez launched the shot—and sank it. The arena erupted in celebration, and Garwood, stunned by the moment, expressed his excitement and gratitude. He plans to use the winnings to help with tuition and contribute to charitable causes.

Rodriguez was at Bucknell to discuss entrepreneurship alongside his Jump co-founders, Marc Lore and Jordy Leiser, both Bucknell alumni. The contest was part of a special event highlighting innovation and business leadership, with Rodriguez engaging students in discussions about financial literacy and career growth.

The viral moment was widely shared across social media, with fans praising Rodriguez’s clutch shot and celebrating Garwood’s unexpected windfall.
