Montgomery County Forum Unites Officials and Immigrant Entrepreneurs

Latin business leaders unite in Norristown to address immigration concerns, emphasizing their vital role in the region’s economy.

A recent forum in Norristown, hosted by the Centro de Cultura Arte Trabajo y Educacion (CCATE), gathered 60 Latin business owners and local leaders, writes Rachel Ravina for The Reporter.

The forum addressed the impact of immigration enforcement on the economy. The event, attended by municipal, state, and federal officials, emphasized the vital role immigrant-owned businesses play in revitalizing communities.

CCATE Executive Director Obed Arango urged leaders to counter anti-immigrant narratives, stressing that Latin entrepreneurs create jobs and contribute to the tax base. Norristown Municipal Council President Rebecca Smith and Montgomery County Commissioners’ Chairwoman Jamila Winder echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the economic strength of immigrant businesses.

Business owners from hospitality, construction, and other industries shared concerns about declining commerce along Norristown’s Marshall Street, once bustling but now quiet amid fears of enforcement. Discussions focused on legislative support and fostering stronger relationships between officials and the immigrant community.

With more than 100,000 immigrants in Montgomery County, leaders reaffirmed their commitment to advocating for policies that protect Latin businesses. As Winder noted, “Norristown’s strengths now, but also historically, come from our diversity.” The forum served as a call to action, reinforcing the need for unity, legislative change, and economic resilience in the face of uncertainty.
