Dramatic displays that combine moving surfaces with the modern capabilities of LED technology have recently begun appearing at trade shows throughout the world.

Known in the industry as kinetic LED video walls, these displays merge the clean, large-format graphics and special effects available by linking multiple LED screens together with sound and structural components that can be programmed to move, creating a real-world 3D effect that complements the effects available via the LED displays.

A Way to Stand Out

These display systems can be used to create spectacular design elements for public spaces like shopping malls, corporate lobbies, and airports; multimedia installations for museums; and anywhere else where the goal is to provide a dazzling audiovisual experience.

“We’ve had a few clients asking about kinetic video walls, and while they’re not in everyone’s budget, we’re seeing more interest,” said Shawn Thornton, Sales Manager at Haverford Systems in Downingtown. “They’re a unique blend of motion, design, and A/V that can give any space a really modern, high-end feel.”

Benefits and Challenges

Creating and installing such systems is a complex process, Thornton noted, beginning with a detailed design that considers how the display’s video, sound, and mechanical elements will work together.

“It’s definitely an undertaking,” Thornton said. “Not only does the designer have to create the video display itself but also understand how the moving components will fit into the overall experience. For instance, we can give the illusion of an image being 3D using flat-panel LED screens alone, but including the physical movement of those LED panels forces us to think in multiple dimensions.”

Meanwhile, with so many moving parts to provide the kinetic effects, these installations could be challenging to maintain in the long run. As a result, installing a kinetic LED video wall is a complex undertaking.

Consult the Professionals

With decades of experience in A/V integration, Haverford Systems is uniquely qualified to manage the conceptualization, design, installation, and maintenance of a kinetic LED video wall.

“We’re proud to include these installations as part the services we offer,” Thornton said “These are huge projects, but Haverford Systems is always up to date on new and emerging technologies in the A/V industry. Our team brings the right mix of innovation and technical skill to tackle complex projects like these.”
