The U.S. Navy is honoring Doylestown marine and Silver Star recipient 1st Lt. Travis Manion by naming a new ship in his memory, writes Chris Ullery for the Bucks County Courier Times.
Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro announced plans to name the future amphibious transport dock after the Bucks County marine who was killed in Iraq in 2007 during a ceremony with the Travis Manion Foundation earlier this month.
“Here, at his alma mater, I am proud to announce that the next San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock, LPD 33, will be named USS Travis Manion, serving as a symbol of courage, bravery, and selfless service for all who follow in her wake,” said Del Toro.
Amphibious transport dock ships deploy Marines, equipment, and supplies for amphibious assaults, special operations, and expeditionary missions, while also serving as secondary aviation platforms.
Manion graduated from the Naval Academy in 2004. After entry-level officer training, he was deployed to his first tour in Iraq. He was killed during an ambush defending his unit on April 29, 2007.
His family founded the veteran-focused nonprofit after his death.
