Jake’s Baristas is more than just a coffee shop nestled within Vinyl Closet Records in Norristown. It’s a community hub for teens and adults with special needs to gain vital work experience and skills.
Owners Angela and Jason McFarland started the enterprise to channel their autistic son Jake’s passion for coffee into a meaningful opportunity. What began as a curbside coffee stand during the COVID pandemic has grown to be so much more.
The shop’s mission is to break down barriers for individuals with special needs through vocational training, interview coaching, and resume building. Angela uses her 30 years of experience in recruitment and HR to prepare their associates to enter the job market. They partner with local programs like Upper Merion School District’s SAIL Transition Program to offer a support space to foster confidence and independence.
Beyond that, the coffee shop is tailor-made to build social skills. Jake, now 24, has transformed from a reserved high school graduate into a skilled and personable barista. “He can often be overheard exchanging ‘How did you hear about us,’ and ‘thanks for coming in,’ finished with a ‘Go Birds,’ or ‘Go Phils’ to customers,” said proud mother, Angela.
For customers, there’s more than just great coffee. The shop also hosts all-inclusive monthly open mic nights and community events.
Jake’s Baristas will celebrate 5 years of service at their annual fundraiser this April at the Sunnybrook Ballroom in Pottstown.
