Come one, come all to the Mennonite Heritage Center on the first day of February, where Harleysville Hank, local weather prognosticator, will announce either more weeks of winter or the start of spring.
The 10th Annual Harleysville Hank Groundhog Day Extravaganza will take place on Saturday, Feb. 1, beginning at 8:45 AM. Gather at the barn for coffee, hot chocolate, fresh homemade scrapple, Harleysville Hank’s prognostication, and rousing Groundhog Carols. To celebrate Hank’s ten years, there will also be a birthday cake and card to sign for southeastern Pennsylvania’s groundhog prognosticator extraordinaire. You are invited to bring friends and family of all ages for this lighthearted observance of Groundhog Day.
An enduring tradition of Pennsylvania Dutch culture and lore, the commemoration of Groundhog Day developed into a national phenomenon. In preparation for his momentous prognostication, Harleysville Hank journeys around the community. Follow his adventures on Facebook to see where he goes.
The Harleysville Hank Groundhog Day Extravaganza is dedicated to the memory of Steve Diehl, the late Executive Director of the Mennonite Heritage Center who inaugurated the celebration in 2015 in partnership with the Indian Valley Chamber of Commerce. It is also made possible in part by the support of these sponsors: G. A. Peak Excavating, Inc., a family-owned excavating contractor located in Bucks County, and Edwin S. Bechtel, Inc., providing paving services in Bucks and Montgomery Counties.
The Mennonite Heritage Center is located at 565 Yoder Road, Harleysville. Programming at the Mennonite Heritage Center shares Anabaptist-Mennonite stories in order to educate, inspire, and witness to the church and community. To learn more about our work, visit mhep.org.
