A heartfelt appeal from Norristown parent Almyra Taylor at Tuesday’s municipal council meeting secured crucial support for the Norristown Youth Athletic Association (NYAA) 10U Bengals, writes Rachel Ravina for The Reporter.
The team won the Eastern Region Championship in their debut Pop Warner League season. Now, they need $25,000 to compete in the national championship in Orlando, Florida, from Dec. 7-14.
Taylor emphasized the program’s impact on keeping kids off the streets and out of trouble, urging council members to help. “ They deserve it. They’ve come this far,” she said. Her plea resonated with the council, which pledged nearly $15,000 from discretionary funds, in addition to $5,625 raised through a GoFundMe campaign.
Council President Tom Lepera led the charge with a $3,500 commitment, followed by contributions from other council members, ranging from $1,600 to $5,000. The council chambers erupted in applause as officials rallied around the Norristown Bengals.
The NYAA, launched this year for kids ages 5 to 13, prepares young athletes for high school sports while fostering community and discipline.
The Bengals’ players and supporters are determined to bring home a national championship trophy. NYAA President Ingrid Parker was impressed by their enthusiasm. They’re so excited. They are feeling like they want to bring home that national championship trophy to NASD,” she said.
Fundraising continues as the community works to close the gap and make the trip a reality.
