Collegeville Italian Bakery Brings Back Its ‘Pizza with a Purpose’ Program for Tenth Year

For the tenth year, Collegeville Italian Bakery made sure that working first responders were well fed during Thanksgiving with its “Pizza with a Purpose" program.

For the tenth straight year, Collegeville Italian Bakery made sure that working first responders were well fed during Thanksgiving, writes Howard Monroe for CBS News.

This year, the local bakery fed working first responders from 20 different local departments, up from 15 last year.

Through its “Pizza with a Purpose” program, the Montgomery County staple provided enough pies to feed all the working staff members at those departments, on the house.

“It’s just to give back,” said owner Steve Carcarey. “The men and women out there are protecting us while we’re with our friends, with our family having a good meal.”

Last year saw staff from 15 different townships arrive at Collegeville Italian Bakery at staggered times to pick up enough pizzas to feed everyone.

“They’re working 12-hour shifts, so they’re not with their families,” said Carcarey. “So giving them a little breakfast pizza just as a thank you, a little courtesy. Where would we be without them?”

To make sure everybody got their pizza hot, each department arrived at a separate pickup time spaced 15 minutes apart.
