A new public art project is coming to life in Lansdale, thanks to the dedication of local artist Roxanne Slemmer, writes Dan Sokil for The Reporter.
Situated on the 100 block of East Main Street, this volunteer-driven mosaic mural is gradually taking shape. Slemmer, who also offers free mosaic lessons every Monday night, has spent six years planning and creating the piece, aiming to complete it by next spring.
The mural illustrates a historical timeline of Lansdale, featuring landmarks like the Jenkins Homestead, a steam locomotive, the borough’s freight station, Memorial Park gazebo, and the Silk Factory apartments.
Flowers and wildlife fill the spaces between these iconic sights, with additional elements like the Kugel Ball and the town’s water tower depicted as well. The project also includes quirky touches, such as a bowling pin representing the old Lans-Bowl.
Assembling the mural is a community effort involving over 200 volunteers of all ages. Participants help attach pieces using polymer-based additives. Recent streetscape upgrades on East Main Street briefly delayed progress, but the mural was showcased during Founders Day festivities in August.
Upcoming plans include a series of life-size teen silhouettes in various poses, promising even more vibrant art for the community to enjoy. With warm weather aiding her work, the project continues to grow, one colorful piece at a time.
