Lansdale Police are alerting residents about recent Eastern coyote sightings around Wissahickon Park, near East Main Street, Knapp Road, and Norway Drive, reports Tony Di Domizio for North Penn Now.

Reports indicate coyotes sightings in Lansdale in nearby areas, including Wissahickon Park Apartments, Valleybrook Drive, and Knapp Elementary School. Authorities note that the state’s coyote population has been on the rise for years.

Coyotes are drawn to urban areas due to consistent access to food, water, shelter, and space, according to police. They have sharp senses and are naturally cautious, but can become dangerous when they grow desensitized to human activity. Feeding coyotes, for instance, reduces their fear of people and raises the risk of interactions.

Police urge residents not to approach or feed coyotes. They recommend several precautions: supervise pets and children, remove outdoor food and waste, and consider using fencing or repellents. Encounters are typically non-aggressive, but staying calm and aware is essential.

Eastern coyotes, Canis latrans, weigh between 45-55 pounds and measure 4-5 feet in length. Their coats range from gray to tan with black markings, reddish cheeks, and erect ears. They communicate through yips, barks, and howls. Though primarily nocturnal, they can be active during daylight, especially in the morning. Currently, coyotes are in their breeding season, and young coyotes typically leave their families by October’s end.
