St. Joseph’s University’s First Varsity Women’s Golf Team Paves Way for Future Generations

This year, St. Joseph’s added a varsity women’s golf team of five players and has already played its first NCAA Division I event.

St. Joseph’s University added a varsity women’s golf program this year and its five original members are hoping to pave the way for future generations of students, writes Mia Messina for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

The team is led by Theresa Luu, who graduated from St. Joe’s two years ago.

“I played on the club team here, and then from coaching summer camp at my local golf course, Town & Country Golf Links, I realized, ‘Wait, I really like coaching,’” she said.

The team currently has five members, three are freshmen, one a junior, and a sophomore. They already played their first NCAA Division I event last month at the Bucknell Invitational.

Freshman Hanna Mitchell joined the Hawks because she knew the team would be making history.

“We’re trying to make a pathway for the future girls of women’s golf,” she said. “It’s a growing sport. It’s something great to be involved in. There’s a couple bumps in the road, but that’s how it’s going to go. I think what’s most important is we’re setting up a good foundation for a good program for years to come.”
